I’ve been working with the good people at Wired Italia quite a bit lately, on both the print and ipad editions of the magazine. These looping animations were commissioned to illustrate a feature on the best apps for different categories of consumer (geek, fitness enthusiast, family, workaholic, and globetrotter). It’s a fun challenge to do stuff that straddles new and traditional media like this, and I love the way they’ve been implemented in the app. Thanks to Daniela Sanziani for that clip, and her fantastic art direction.

SUICIDAL AKIROV

Suicidal Akirov, was created as an architectural tribute to “High Rise” - a novel of the great English novelist J.G Ballard. I was deeply disturbed with the thought of how relevant the idea of the fanatic isolation that the 21th century dwelling experience Imposes on all of us. The intense depression, of the high rise residence, which led them to bestial violent behaviors, unsettlingly lingered in my mind. Akirov Towers are iconic tween buildings in the center of Tel Aviv, Israel, which represent the hyper capitalism culture that devours the metropolitan since the late 90s. In the drawing I depicted one of the buildings and placed people jumping from its balconies. On the top of the drawing I quoted the disturbing opening line of Ballard’s novel which refer to the process of mental decadence caused by the self-inflicted alienation of the high rise dwellers:  “Later, as he sat on his balcony eating the dog, Dr. Robert Laing reflected on the unusual events that had taken place within this huge apartment building during the previous three months”.

Suicidal Akirov, was drawn with a Wacom table in Photoshop, 2014. It is the second part of a 4 pieces series called ABANDONED which deals with different urban situations in the current urban domain. The full series can be viewed in my website: www.roydavidstudio.com.

I want you to imagine a ten year old version of yourself sitting right there on this couch. Now this is the little girl who first believed that she was fat, and ugly, and an embarrassment.

This is groundbreaking

this is my third time rebloging this today. this is so important.
